(1) 27 El Dorado St. - F. Shilling Cutlery & Fire Arms opened for business here in 1862, and would stay in business until 1982. The building is still standing and now houses Acapulco Jewelers - a purveyor of gold-plated Jesuses lashed to the tin-plated wheels of ships, among other things. The building was constructed in the late 1850's. Street numbers changed in 1884. 291
El Dorado became 27 El Dorado. (2) Adjacent to Shillings, at 293 El Dorado, was a barber shop owned by Jacques Chanteuse. Note barber pole in photo. This shop was a precursor to Cole's and Moak's Fancy Barber Shop (3)
The El Dorado Saloon. No doubt this
building holds many stories. (4) Posters announce the arrival of a circus and Mademoiselle Marie. If anyone can find anything about Mlle. Marie, and what her role in the circus was - please share. Perhaps she was a trapeezist. I implore all circus-history wienees to research this and report back. |
