The Minor Building

The office of The San Jose Mercury (1), above Louis Krumb's Lager Beer Depot (2), faced First St. The building also housed J.H. Heering's Photographic Gallery, Justice of the Peace Charles G. Thomas, and dentist J.J. Mehefee (3). J.B. Bompard's Grocery held down the corner (see brooms).

J.J. Owens and his San Jose Mercury set up shop in the Minor Building in 1861. In 1870 the San Jose Mercury moved to 384 First St.

The Minor Building took a tumble in the 1906 earthquake . . . nature mimicking the San Jose ReDevelopment Agency.

(4) Note the posters on El Dorado side of building. I have seen tens of thousands of photographs of the Minor Building, and there are always posters plastered on this wall - usually advertising the approach of a circus or theater group.

J.H. Heering's Photographic Gallery, on the corner of El Dorado and First, suggests the liklihood of other photos of the street. Alas, that is not the case, with the exception of many photos of J.H. Heering's Photographic Gallery.
