In the late 1960's, Nellie moved out of the White Pelican and into this smaller cabin in the north-west quadrant of Station Island. This cabin afforded more protection from the constant vandalism occurring - a result of the Mercury News printing stories of abandoned cabins loaded with valuable antiques. Eventually, the barbarians broke through the gate. "Oh, my God! That was a terrible night.
Yeah, my granddaughter and I were here in the house. We were
alone and it was a moonlit night and we were watching television.
It was about 9:00 p.m. and I came out here for a look around
and I see these two kids were shouting and yelling. You know,
they were drunk. They kicked down the front door out there [a
door on the walkway] and that time I shot the gun out the window
and everything was dead still." Nellie had had enough and moved to Hayward. |
