Founded in 1877, the YWCA of Oakland is the oldest community service organization in the San Francisco East Bay. Located in a historic landmark building designed by Julia Morgan, America's first prominent female architect, the Oakland YWCA has the distinction of being the first in the community to provide numerous critical services such as housing for young women migrating from rural to urban areas at the turn of the century, support for fair housing, employment training and equal rights for women and minorities, prenatal and family planning services for young women, teen pregnancy prevention outreach, and athletic programs for the disabled.
