In 1899, history-conscious San Joseans erected a replica of the Old Capitol building in Plaza Park across from City Hall (Market and San Antonio St.).

This wistful homage to "the Capitol that got away" would be repeated in 1949. I have been told the 1949 replica now resides at the Santa Clara County fairgrounds, though I have not seen it.

Dec 15 1999 marked the 150 year anniversay of San Jose's tenure as State Capitol. The Mercury News took no notice of the event. Neither did anyone else.
