The bronze cannon on the bottom step of the monument has had its moments. On Halloween night, 1933, malefactors loaded the cannon with gun-powder and ignited the fuse. The concussion blew out the windows of the Santa Clara County Courthouse across the street. A more serious incident occured in 1918 (see next page). |
