Bronze statue of William McKinley standing on granite block. From this spot McKinley spoke to San Jose on May 13, 1901. A portion of his speech is carved in granite.

The bronze cannon on the bottom step of the monument has had its moments. On Halloween night, 1933, malefactors loaded the cannon with gun-powder and ignited the fuse. The concussion blew out the windows of the Santa Clara County Courthouse across the street. A more serious incident occured in 1918 (see next page).
