Frederick Law Ohmstead, the landscape designer, also executed New York's Central Park and the Mall in Washington, DC.

The egregious decision to run 2nd St. through the park severely compromised its character. A second blow came with the construction of the St. James Community Center in the north-east corner of the park on Feb. 25, 1968. If you start putting up buildings in parks, why bother with a park in the first place?
