43 El Dorado St. (1898) - Patrick Sullivan's Shoes This was the address of Patrick Sullivan's boot and shoe repair shop. Patrick was the father of Leo Sullivan, noted San Jose musician, who penned a recollection of El Dorado St. - quoted extensively on this site. Leo describes the changing fortunes
of boot making: "In the "Good Old Days" of the 1870's, he had 16 boot makers employed. Mornings found him in the Auzerais House, taking the measurements of miners for new boots. When made, the boots would be forwarded to the "Diggins" by stage coach." |
