Like other Drawbridge residents, Charlie was constantly plagued by vandals, who would shoot into his cabin even when he was home. They would walk right into his cabin at times - and right out again when Charlie escorted them off the island with the aid of a shotgun. "One of Charlie's hobbies was
searching for artifacts. He used a long, pointed stick and would
push it down in the mud until he struck something hard. He would
dig down and retrieve whatever was there; sometimes he found
old bottles, and sometimes old stoves. Because of the salt-soaked
wood that they burned, the stoves didn't last long. Dumping then
into the marsh was a quick way to get rid of them."
Charlie's house burned down in 1986. Probably vandals. |
