The coming of the railroad in 1864
dramatically curtailed activity on the docks of Alviso. Nevertheless,
transportation of fruit and vegetables continued for decades.
Alviso Mills, founded in 1853, flourished into the 1870's. On
the same location, Bayside Canning Company operated until 1936.
Steamboats continued to navigate the slough, as well as schooners,
yachts, barges, and houseboats.
Shrimp boats operate out of Alviso
to this day. Other boats are launched from the tiny boat slip
at the Alviso Marina - a ditch leading to Alviso Slough. |
