Charles Henry McKiernan - Mountain Charlie. Born in 1830 in Ireland. In 1850 Charlie settled in the Santa Cruz moutains to raise sheep. After cougars killed seventy of his sheep in one night, he switched to being a big game hunter. He killed 1000 deer in one year and sold them in San Francisco for 5 to 10 dollars a head. The carcasses were shipped to San Francisco from Alviso.
