From the outside Trinity Episcopal Church looks like a Norman castle. Solid, old and weathered stones seem anchored to the earth upon which it rests, as if ready to withstand the onslaught of time and armies alike.

It was built in 1892 in the likeness of a Medieval fortress, with crenelated towers and authentic gargoyles silently on guard.

But don't be deceived by the stoic facade of this hallowed landmark building. A realm of subtle beauty awaits within where the great interior domed space rises overhead. While outside there is the sombre grayness of stone, inside all is airyness and light. The recently restored sanctuary includes both a bronze angel and two stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The acoustics are magnificent, among the finest around, reverberant yet clear. In this vaulted chamber of a Norman-Romanesque relic that brings the Middle Ages back to life in San Francisco, it is not just the instrument but also the building itself that makes music ring
