This Year at the RepSan Jose Repertory Theatre Unveils 30th Anniversary Seasonby Michael S. Gant on Feb 04, 2010For San Jose Rep’s 2010-11 season, new artistic director Rick Lombardo has just announced the world premiere of Philip Kan Gotanda’s Love in American Times, a romantic comedy. The show, which opens May 12, 2011, examines with a wry eye the meeting, dating and wedding plans of a well-off WASPy business type and a young Asian woman. Lombardo will direct. The season begins in September with the West Coast premiere of Black Pearl Sings by Frank Higgins—the drama with music about an ethnomusicologist who befriends a Texas prisoner and blues singer named Pearl Johnson. Another regional premiere follows: Secret Order by Robert Clyman. This biomedical thriller features a showdown between a powerful corporation and a cancer researcher over a potential cure worth a fortune. The show runs Oct. 14–Nov. 7. Starting Nov. 24, the company presents the premiere of a new musical, Backwards in High Heels, by Lynnette Barkley and Christopher McGovern. Famed Hollywood dancer and Fred Astaire partner Ginger Rogers is remembered in song-and-dance numbers. The show gives a glimpse at both her professional and private life. In January of 2011, Ken Ruta and James Carpenter star in the backstage drama The Dresser, about a famed actor and Lear interpreter, Sir, and his dresser, Norman, who manages to keep the old man up for one more performance.
