Themed WeddingsOne San Jose couple takes a unique approach to their wedding ceremonyby Kristine Bautista on May 20, 2010SPRINGTIME is synonymous with weddings. It is the time of year when greenery and color allay the winter gloom. What couple wouldn’t want to seal their vows during the season of birth and renewal? This season there are some noteworthy trends that are chipping away at traditional wedding formats and ushering in some new advances on how people say “I do.” One type of nuptial that is growing in popularity is the themed wedding. By going beyond the time-honored forms, weddings can be as tasteful or outrageous as the couple wills them to be. Some of these special events are based on simple symbols—a bride’s favorite flower, for instance—or they can incorporate a specific style, such as the popular “fairy tale”–inspired ceremony. One can choose an even more subtle motif, such as a color (black and burgundy for a goth affair?) or location (the redwoods, anyone?). The most important value, naturally, is to find a theme that expresses the tastes of both the bride and the groom. Aric and Ashley Crewse of San Jose, for example, celebrated their wedding this spring in a ghoulishly romantic “Haunted Mansion” ceremony. “We are young, but our taste is very old,” says Ashley. “From music to antiques, we enjoy things with some history attached. So naturally our wedding had to be the same.” The Crewses used homemade candelabras with black lace, cameo votives and black lanterns to set the mood. Men in top hats, bowlers and even Dracula drag showed up to commemorate the event. Guests were whisked away into a time of lingering organ rifts and mystical allure. In a themed wedding, ambience is the elixir. Decorating brings the creative spark out of both parties, as the theme can be integrated into every component of the event, from the invitations all the way down to the napkins. Whether it’s a Hawaiian premise with a barefoot bride and groom or blackjack dealers at a Las Vegas–style reception, the only limitation to a themed wedding is one’s imagination—and money. It can be a labor of love, but the imaginative effects are often rewarding in ways that a traditional wedding can’t approach. WEDTHEMES.COM has a comprehensive collection of creative and memorable wedding ideas, and BELLAFIGURA.COM offers an array of themed, sustainably made cards and invitations. A themed wedding is all about making the event memorable and extraordinary. Friends may not recall the food that was served, but they will never forget the wedding where everyone arrived in costume or the groom showed up on a motorcycle. The most important value here is to find a theme that expresses the tastes of both the bride and the groom. Wedthemes.com Bellafigura.com by Kristine Bautista on May 20, 2010 |
