Description

(Directed by Kerwin Berk, 2010, 20 minutes, HD, English Language)

Joe Yokai has spent the past 60 years trying to bury the past. The 87-year-old Nisei war veteran lives a solitary life, safe and secure in his insulated world in San Francisco’s Japantown. Joe’s guarded existence is irrevocably changed one day when a half-Japanese reporter named Kevin O’Hara inadvertently intrudes upon his world while researching a story about WWII. Shot almost entirely in Japantown, “The Virtues of Corned Beef Hash” explores the developing friendship of the two men through a series of conversations they have over breakfast at May’s Coffee Shop. Through Joe, Kevin is able to connect with his Japanese American roots. Through Kevin, Joe is finally able to come to terms with his past. The film stars Hiroshi Kashiwagi and Tim Yamamura.
