Description

Lyric Theatre of San Jose marries opera and the excitement of Bollywood dancing at the Montgomery Theater in their upcoming production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s "The Sorcerer."

One of Gilbert and Sullivan's earliest operettas, "The Sorcerer" tells the tale of a young couple who want everyone to be happily mated, but inadvertently set off ridiculous pairings of townspeople through the misuse of John Wellington Wells' magic tea potion. Although the setting has shifted to Victorian India, the story and the music remain the same.

"Those unfamiliar with operetta may find this interpretation enjoyable," said David Euresti, director of the show. "One of the biggest challenges for our cast is dancing in a Bollywood style while singing Victorian light opera, but I think that the expressive nature of the Indian dance adds an interesting dimension."

Euresti is no stranger to this medley, having first experimented with this concept at Stanford Savoyards in 2006.

"Both die-hard Gilbert and Sullivan fans and those who aren’t familiar with their work will be greatly entertained by this production," Lisa Lowe, lead producer, said. The end result is a "classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta with a refreshing dash of spice."

Ishika Seth from Mona Khan Dance Company rejoins Euresti as choreographer. They are joined by vocal and music director, Aaron Schultz.

Tickets are $36 for adults; $33 for students and seniors, with bargain seats for $26 and students under 17 for $11. Discounts are also available for groups of 10 or more.
