In the past three decades, there has been a tremendous increase in our understanding of pediatric skin conditions, the genetic basis for many of these diseases, and their treatment. Skin diseases in infants and young children vary in many aspects from the same diseases in older children and adults. As a result, young children may require a dermatologist with special expertise in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. This is the role of the pediatric dermatologist.
