About
September 6 we invite crafters of all levels, Japanese otaku, and anyone too broke to go to Japan to participate in a unique staycation: a sewing circle field trip with Bay Area artist Corinne Okada Takara. In the peaceful setting of Kojin-an Zendo in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood, participants will be the guests of Yoshi Akiba (of Yoshi's Jazz Club and Restaurant) whose students will welcome the group with a tea ceremony. There will also be a demo and practicum in furoshiki led by www.furoshiki.com who will teach us how to package all kinds of things without resort to paper or plastic. After lunch overlooking Yoshi's garden, we will work to complete a simple purse project designed especially for our group. Inspired by kawaii manga culture, the project blends elements of contemporary Japan with the creative thriftiness of Meiji-era Japan. Expect other surprises throughout the day. Sunday, September 6, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. $95 Lunch included.
Who says a sewing circle has to sit still? November 14 Japanese Fabric Genius travels to the Asian Art Museum for a day with Corinne Okada Takara, www.furoshiki.com, and a special textile-oriented docent tour of the museum. December 5, we move to Japan Town with a walking tour included. More details about these two dates will be posted on the site as they become available.
