Description
Before its six-city tour in 2009, Septeto Nacional Ignacio Pineiro de Cuba hadn't been Stateside in 76 years. They got as close as SF on that tour, but this time they'll make it to the South Bay. We've got a lot of catching up to do. Their reputation as masters of the Cuban son stretches all the way back to the group's founding by Ignacio Pineiro Martinez in 1927, though back then it was just a sexteto. At the time, son, with its blending of Latin guitar and African percussion, was the original Afro-Cuban sensation. Havana was at the height of gangster chic and son was the soundtrack. Pineiro was dubbed the "poet of son," a foreshadowing of epic titles that would be bestowed on the group over the years, including "Patrimonio Nacional de la Cultura Cubana" (Cuban national treasure) and Ambassador of Cuban Folklore in Europe. Martinez quit the group in the mid-30s, and they were on and off until experiencing a renaissance after the Revolution. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.comMore Info
