San Jose Symphonic Choir

About

The San Jose Symphonic Choir is one of the premier volunteer choral societies in California, performing classical and contemporary choral music around the Bay Area and internationally since its founding in 1924.  It has been under the inspiring leadership of Maestro Leroy Kromm since 1985.

The Choir presents major concerts each season, often in collaboration with other local orchestras and choirs, premiering new works and showcasing choral music of many different composers and musical styles.  A highlight of each season is the popular You-Sing-It Messiah, a December tradition at the California Theatre.

Between major concerts, our smaller outreach ensemble, Sotto Voce, brings the gift of choral music to local schools, retirement communities and senior centers, presenting music from the classical repertoire, Renaissance to contemporary.

In 1996, the Choir performed the world premiere of Requiem For Lost Children, by Sondra Clark and in 2003 participated in the world premier of Sisters, a work to honor San Jose and her sister cities by Craig Bohmler.  In the spring of 2006, the group produced and performed the world premiere of the full orchestral version of Beatitude Mass, by Henry Mollicone, raising funds for the homeless of Santa Clara County.  Profits from the sale of the recording of that performance continue to benefit charities that serve the needy worldwide. 

The Choir has sung with John Rutter at Carnegie Hall, with Maestro George Cleve and the Midsummer Mozart Festival Orchestra, and has toured extensively in the U.S., Europe, Russia, Australia and New Zealand.
