San Jose Swine Flu Updateby Eric Johnson on May 01, 2009Four San Jose area schools were closed late Thursday, as the number of cases of swine flu continues to grow. The schools are Delphi Academy, Santa Clara Elan Espirit Preschool, Santa Clara Challenger School and San Jose Rucker Elementary School. Branham High School was closed earlier in the week. As of Friday morning, Santa Cara County has identified seven possible cases of swine flu. The samples have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control for confirmation. The three newest cases involve children who potentially infected other children at their respective schools, according to the Santa Clara County Health Department. “After close evaluation of these three new cases,” the Health Department reports, “and based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Santa Clara Health Officer, working with the respective schools, decided to close the schools.” The Health Department has posted a bulletin with useful information here: http://www.sccgov.org/swine_flu_update.html In related news, the organizers of a May Day march and rally in support of the legalization of undocumented immigrants will take place today as scheduled. According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, the organizers consulted with county public health officials, before deciding to hold the march as planned: “March organizers had initially hoped to draw as many as 10,000 to the gathering that will end at San Jose's City Hall,” the Merc reports, “but officials acknowledged that the swine flu pandemic and its links to Mexico is likely to hurt attendance. By how much, is not clear.” by Eric Johnson on May 01, 2009 |
