Description
San Francisco Poet Laureate Alejandro Murguía, The Voice of the Mission---
History lovers are invited to jazz up their evenings with Top of the Mark’s Poetry & Jazz Series through April 28, 2015. In honor of the 60th anniversary of poet Allen Ginsberg first public reading of his poem “Howl,” one of the great works of American literature and a piece that is thought to be the birth of the Beat Generation, this series celebrates the renaissance of San Francisco in the 1950s and 60s. Steeped in history, the iconic Top of the Mark was named by the legendary Herb Caen who also coined the term ‘beatnik’ making it the perfect venue for the series. With custom-created cocktails and bites, comfortable stage seating, fantastic views, and the sounds of iconic poets riffing to jazz beats, guests will enjoy a unique experience at the legendary Top of the Mark lounge.
For the first-ever Poetry & Jazz Series, Top of the Mark has partnered with San Francisco’s Beat Museum, dedicated to spreading the spirit of The Beat Generation. Located in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, The Beat Museum is home to an extensive collection of Beat memorabilia, including original manuscripts and first editions, letters, personal effects and cultural ephemera, occupying the same ground that was once the epicenter for Beat activity during the 1950s.
