Description
The artists exhibiting in 'Relativity' are, through their painting, exploring familial connections, notions of heritage, and relationships between relatives. The artists often begin with a memory of an experience or a shared family story. Inspiration comes from photographs, letters, or heirlooms translated into paintings rich with symbology and meaning. In these works there is nothing left to chance, each mark and figure is deliberately included to relate the artist's experience to the viewer.Despite the universality of family, one person's particular heritage and experience is unique to themselves and those who share it with their relatives. For the viewer, an outsider, a glossary is needed for translation and understanding. To offer insight into their creative process, the artists of Relativity will display artifacts from their studios that they live and work with everyday and that are frequently the source of inspiration for their work. Along with a handwritten explanation of their work, viewers are allowed a rare glimpse into the myriad elements from which a finished painting is assembled.
