Description
Exhibition and reception for current artists-in-residence Samuel Levi Jones, Jeremy Rourke and student artist Shushan Tesfuzigta on Friday, September 26, from 5-9pm and Saturday, June 27, from 1-3pm. Additional viewing hours will be held on Tuesday, September 30, from 5-7pm, followed by a gallery walk-through with the artists at 7pm. This exhibition will be the culmination of four months of work by the artists who have scavenged materials from the dump to make art and promote recycling and reuse.Samuel Levi Jones: Disposing Histories:
Jones disassembles encyclopedias, medical reference books, and sports balls to metaphorically deconstruct the power structures connected to these objects. With their skin-like covers removed and reassembled into formal grids and groupings, the works have a painterly quality, while also suggesting the act of gaining personal control over the establishments that surround us.
Jeremy Rourke: Lyrics on the Paper:
Rourke combines vintage photographs, contemporary imagery, text, and other materials in stop-motion animated videos that are filled with moments of beauty and surprise. With the look of bygone days come to life, and presented in tandem with his own musical compositions, Rourke’s live cinema performances connect to traditions of traveling road shows and small town entertainment in the early 20th century. Rourke will perform with his video hourly throughout the receptions.
Shushan Tesfuzigta: Come Sit with Me:
Tesfuzigta furthers her mission to create sustainable work at the intersection of industrial design and textiles through the creation of woven chairs, stools, and other functional objects. Working with metal, rebar, phone cords and other plastic coated wire, she embraces the low-tech aspect of her materials and process, and provides instruction so that others might be able to replicate her designs.
