About

Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP) creates, exhibits and distributes new films that authentically reflect the lives of queer women of color and address the vital social justice issues that concern multiple communities.  We bridge seemingly disparate populations to transform and empower our participants, audiences, communities through art, activism and movement building to spark grassroots activism and the social justice.

We actively invest in, develop, and nurture the creativity and artistic leadership of African Descent/Black, Asian/ Pacific Islander, Arab/Middle Eastern/South West Asian/North African, Chicana/Latina, Native American & Mixed-race lesbians, same-gender-loving, bisexual, queer and questioning women of color and transgender, genderqueer and gendernonconforming people of color.  We offer free programs to guarantee access to our underserved communities, especially youth, immigrants, low-income and marginally housed people.



Through three programs, we attract an underserved community that few arts organizations successfully reach:  Since 2000, our Filmmaker Training Program has offered free, professional training to engage queer women of color in the creation of over 220 new films, which have screened and won juried awards at international film festivals around the world.  Since 2003, our free Queer Women of Color Film Festival has bridged seemingly disparate populations through film, public discussion and community engagement.  Since 2004, our Distribution Program has increased the visibility of queer women of color and educated the public about our lives to diversify the cultural fabric of society.


Our vision nurtures queer women of color filmmakers as artist-activist leaders to create systemic change and lead social justice movements that incorporate the power of art as cultural resistance, cultural resilience and cultural renewal.
