About
Few places are cool enough to hang in Hayes Valley. These blocks at the edge of the Civic Center hub of performing arts are, after all, among the city's hippest square blocks. Independent art galleries, tony furniture shops, and whimsical clothing boutiques showcase their wares with the seeming disinterest of the truly confident who so unwittingly set trends. It says a lot that paul k fits right in.
The décor is all Hayes Valley, from its brushed steel 'K' door and zinc-topped wraparound bar, all the way to its mesh steel-backed chairs. Frosted front windows artfully silhouette couples leaning towards each other, nursing signature cocktails. The clientele is varied, with a pre-theater crowd of older couples, in from the suburbs for dinner before the symphony or ballet. After eight or so, the crowd tends towards the younger, hipper, better camouflaged against the framed works of the resident artist.
