In the almost four decades since the telephone tower was built on Communications Hill, a whole new neighborhood has been built around the tower—built, rather than sprung up. Lining the slopes are townhouses, condos and detached single homes, most of which have a commanding view of southern Silicon Valley. Following the blogs yesterday, it looked like the détente between Google and China had fallen apart almost as quickly as it was hobbled together. Early on Thursday Google claimed that its search, ads, and mobile services were completely blocked, while other services such as Google News and Google Images were only partially blocked.

A survey published by the Daily Beast shows that San Jose ranks third for the number of coffee shops per capita in the US, with 20- for every 100,000 residents. And since statistics never lie, it is also worth noting that New Yorkers spend a measly $27 per month on coffee, while the good people of San Jose spend a respectable $34.

Valerie Evans, a certified sommelier, owns the Grapevine, a wine and cheese shop in Willow Glen. She first worked at the store as an intern one night a week. The internship eventually led to an account executive position with a local wine distributor. To feed her growing interest in wine, she completed the Professional Culinary Institute’s sommelier course, but she did not stop there. With the knowledge and skills she received from master sommelier David Glancy, she sat for the Court of Masters Sommelier Certification exam. She offers that knowledge to her customers at the Grapevine.
