City Council to Expedite New Construction Projects

The City Council is expected to expedite the construction of four new rental housing projects in North San Jose, valued at about $1 billion. The projects are expected to add 8,800 new jobs to the local construction industry. In order to ease the projects’ construction, the Council voted unanimously to lift the current affordable housing requirements in redevelopment zones, which, they claim, have prevented a number of potential projects from moving forward.

Five Arrested in Kidnapping Case

Five Arrested in Kidnapping Case

The SJPD has arrested five men for allegedly kidnapping a local businessman and demanding $1 million in ransom from his family. The victim, described as a local food business owner, was released from a home in the 1100 block of Fargate Circle and taken to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries resulting from the incident.

Peninsula Loses out on Bullet Trains for Now

The High Speed Rail Authority has decided that the first line to be laid will be between Merced and Bakersfield, not San Francisco and San Jose. For unions this means the loss of tens of thousands of potential construction jobs, while Caltrain will have to postpone its switch to electric trains. Because it does not connect major population centers, the new line will not have any trains running on it when it is completed.

Chief Development Officer Paul Krutko announced his resignation, effective today, in an email to his department.Krutko has been with the city for eight years, and has several important accomplishments under his belt. He oversaw the purchase of 75 acres to expand Mineta Airport, and he negotiated with eBay to ensure that they stay in the city and expand their presence in San Jose. Kim Walesh will serve as Interim Chief Development Officer.
