The layoffs could include over 300 police officers, a first for the city, which is already struggling with a spike in violent crime. Mayor Chuck Reed sees retirement benefits as a key part of the problem. They will cost the city $61 million this year.

100-year-old dog stolen with truck

Of all the days for heartbreaking news, one would hope Valentine’s Day would be set aside out of respect. Unfortunately for Richard Brooks, his black truck was stolen Monday morning while he was working out at Gold’s Gym on Monterey Road. Inside the GMC Yukon was his 14-year-old pug, Jessica. (In dog years, she is roughly 100.) The truck and pug have not been found yet.

Never to be outdone by San Francisco, the good people of San Jose decided that the Bay Area’s largest city would host its own Slumber Party to compete with San Francisco’s Annual Great American Slumber Party. And so a tradition was born.

Every silver lining has a cloud, they say. While the city really wants a $14.9 million FEMA grant to rehire laid off firefighters, accepting it means they can’t lay them off again for two years. The only way to avoid this would be for the firefighters to accept a 10 percent salary cut, and refusing to accept that cut led to the layoffs in the first place.

The neighborhood stretching diagonally from the center of downtown San Jose to Backesto Park—a section of the 95112 Zip—features some choice old apartment houses scattered among single-family units. Most of these are two- and three-stories, and some have received recent renovations. Among these older landmarks are a number of newer complexes—some of which bring a nice contemporary style to the neighborhood.
