Adios Mexicana Airlines

Normally, a problem some people face is how to get from Mexico into the United States. Not so this weekend. As the clock struck midnight on Saturday, Mexicana Airlines stopped flying out of San Jose’s Mineta Airport, leaving dozens of passengers stranded. They had few options. The airline also, which is facing bankruptcy, also stopped flying out of San Francisco and Oakland.

A Classic California Bistro

The menu at Bistro Elan is French at its roots but with a California sensibility given its reliance on local and seasonal produce. The kitchen sources most of its produce from the California Avenue farmers market right out the front door. The result is a short but instantly likeable menu that reminds me anew of why we’re so lucky to live and eat in Northern California. There’s a brief but well-chosen (and reasonably priced) wine list that’s strong on both California and French wines.

HP and Dell are involved in a bidding war over Fremont-based 3Par, the world’s “fourth fastest growing technology company,” which produces hardware disc arrays and storage management software. The company closed at $26.03 on Thursday, 50 percent higher than at the start of trading, as a result.

Alum Rock Park was closed yesterday, and there was no access or activities for people seeking a place to escape from the scorching heat. The problem was the scorching heat. Authorities determined that the high temperatures were conducive to extreme fire conditions, especially considering the fire that has been raging on nearby Mount Diablo.

Still, the design team at Threesixty Architecture has put together the first renderings of what San Jose’s proposed MLB stadium may look like one day.  Over on the Baseball San Jose blog, comments are generally positive, with people commenting on the overall architecture, the gentle curve that follows the Guadalupe River, and especially how it will revitalize downtown.

Team San Jose Under Fire

Team San Jose Under Fire

The city’s problems with Team San Jose are coming to a head. Last Wednesday, City Finance Director Scott Johnson sent a notice of default to CEO Dan Fenton, denying it access to municipal funds. TSJ had overspent its budget by $750,000. San Jose City Councilmember Sam Liccardo calls the notice “a wake-up call for the council” and is calling for an expanded audit.

Street Racers Locked Up

Last October, Emmanuel Pourmand, 22, and Joseph Inocencio, 19, were racing down Branham Lane in one of the frequent drag races that plague that quiet stretch of road. Pourmand lost control of his vehicle and hit a Volkswagen driven by Alyson Snow, 20, killing her instantly. On Friday, a judge sentenced Pourmand to the maximum nine years in prison, while Inocencio received six years and eight months.
