Now the city and county are saying that there may have been improprieties and conflicts of interest in the selection of a provider and its exclusion from the project’s initial stage.

All Eyes on Geron

All eyes are on Menlo Park firm Geron as it prepares to run its first test on a human patient, using embryonic stem cells. Geron is taking advantage of a window in legislation regarding the controversial treatment, which uses which cells harvested from human embryos, usually collected after failed in-vitro fertilization attempts. Geron is, so far, the only company in the U.S. licensed by the FDA to test the cells on humans.

Firefighters Blame Budget Cuts for Shutting Down Radio Stations

A fire at the Eggo waffle plant on Sunday spread to a nearby building, knocking out two local radio stations: KSJX, which serves the Vietnamese community, and KZSF, which serves the Hispanic community. The SJFD claims that part of the problem was the city’s budget cuts, which led to the layoff of 49 firefighters and the elimination of a water engine from the station right across the freeway.

Local Student Spied on by FBI

The FBI attached a GPS tracking device to the car of a local student without first obtaining a warrant. Yasir Afifi found the device when he took his car in for an oil change and promptly removed it. Two days later FBI agents approached him as he left his apartment. Federal law says that the FBI is allowed to track vehicles with GPS devices in the public space.

The Price of Pot to Come

San Jose is about to decide whether it will join the ranks of cities that tax pot too. In November, residents will weigh in on Measure U, the “Medical Marijuana Ordinance,” which taxes every stage of the medical marijuana industry, from planting to processing to wholesale and retail. Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio says, “This is the only type of tax that would pass in this environment. We tax alcohol, we tax cigarettes … this would fall into the same category.”

Google Reveals Driverless Car

Driving cars has gotten a lot easier thanks to Google Maps, and now thank to the Google steering wheel and the Google gas pedal too. The search engine megasite just announced that it has been testing its new robot car, which drives, parks, and gets around traffic without the pesky interference of a driver. They’ve put the “auto” back in automobile, using GPS, video cameras, radar, and computers for a smooth driving experience, on highways and around town.
