Description
Music Now: Voices of Our TimeThe wealth of ideas expressed in music has always evolved alongside the march of history; as we enter the twenty-first century, the breadth of the art of chamber music has never been more expansive. The final program of Music@Menlo’s 2008 season celebrates the rich diversity of the music of our time. “Music Now” features West Coast premieres by two of today’s leading female composers: Scenes from the Poet’s Dreams by Brooklyn-born Jennifer Higdon, written for pianist Gary Graffman; and selections from the ongoing cycle Songs of Cifar and the Sweet Sea by Peruvian-American Gabriela Lena Frank. The program also features the world premiere of Music@Menlo’s first commission: a new piano trio by the American composer Kenneth Frazelle. The 2008 season culminates with the powerful Elegy: Snow in June for cello and percussion quartet, written by Chinese composer Tan Dun to memorialize the events at Tiananmen Square in 1989.
