Description
Opening Reception: September 18, 6:30pmExhibition: September 19 – October 10, 2014
Mother War (Notre Mere La Guerre), a new graphic novel, brings a new twist to WWI for its 100 year anniversary. Disguising an investigation of the motives of war as a detective yarn, its noir narrative is expertly built around the suspicious deaths of three different women in 1915, each left with a sealed letter by their apparent killer. Highly regarded in its native France for the vivid fusion of artist Mael’s piercing hand and the metaphysically minded stylistics of author Kris (The World of Lucy, Svoboda), Mother War brings a fresh perspective to a well-worn inquiry. Goethe-Institut's exhibition will show original paintings from the graphic novel along with materials documenting the creative process of the comic, including sketches and exposés that show artists Kris and Maël exploring the expressive possibilities of the medium. Mother War opens on September 18 at 6:30pm and is part of an ongoing series including film screenings, exhibitions and panel discussions on the impact of WWI that will run through October 10, 2014 at Goethe-Institut’s ART Lounge on 560 Bush Street. All events are free and open to the public.
