Jonn Herschend will continue experimenting with wayward fictions and unreliable narrators in a multi-media installation at Steven Wolf Fine Arts called The Book You Said I Never Returned, plus three to five pastorals. Based on a long-running episode from the author’s life, or from the life of a character designed by the author, Herschend's installation will attempt to prove that a book, which was borrowed, Don Quixote in fact, was actually returned. The installation features paintings of the office where the initial loan was made, photographs of a cubicle where the lender works, a power point presentation in which the borrower brings to bear all his powers of persuasion to convince the viewer that the book was definitely returned and to discuss other problems. And a new film involving an office pastoral. It’s possible, after seeing this show, you’ll never trust in the veracity of an exhibition again.

Discussion of the book began in Blow Up, a documentary film Herschend made last Spring about an exhibition of his friend Tucker Nichol's work at Gallery 16 in San Francisco. Halfway through Herschend hijacks the story and puts a reluctant Nichols to work on proving the borrowed book was indeed returned. Regrettably for Herschend nothing gets resolved in the film, which will be screened in public for the first time at the San Francisco Film Society on November 6th, forcing him to continue his argument at Steven Wolf Fine Arts.

Jonn Herschend is an artist, experimental publisher and filmmaker. Since receiving his MFA at U.C. Berkley in 2006 he co-founded THE THING Quarterly, an object-based publication that has produced works by Jonathan Lethem, James Franco and Miranda July among others. His videos and installations have been shown at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, PA, Den Frie Contemporary Art Center, Copenhagen, Denmark, the San Francisco International Film Festival and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco.
