Jeremy Kidd: Fictional RealitiesJune 30 – July 28, 2007
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 30th, 5 - 7 pm
Jeremy Kidd, a Los Angeles-based artist, will present a new body of work at Scott Richards Contemporary Art in San Francisco. Entitled Fictional Realities.
It could be argued that Jeremy Kidd is the great “visual multi-tasker,” his eye to the camera, gazing everywhere at once, capturing each nuance of light and space. Kidd presents a series of Chromogenic prints, composed of hundreds of images, transposed and manipulated to create an intricate range of visual relationships. Kidd has set himself the task of redefining the American landscape, with dramatic, photo collages of notable architectural landmarks. The Chrysler Building in New York, the Brooklyn Bridge and San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, are such chosen edifices.
These images are manipulated, spliced, repeated, expanded, minimized, and reconfigured. Disorientating, yet closer to the way we actually catch glimpses of and interpret our own surroundings, these photographic panoramas speak of what the camera saw, yet simultaneously translated into the artist’s personalized perceptions.
Kidd feels that it is unrealistic to expect a single photographic shot of a single moment in time to convey the human experience of seeing. He explains his re-assemblage of multiple images as a process of painting with pixels, taking up to three months to complete one piece. By taking hundreds of digital images of buildings and their settings, and then reassembling them, Kidd attempts to create a dizzying array of detail, literally, much like the 19th century landscape paintings of the Hudson River School. Kidd’s cut up images of cityscapes are not meant to suggest destruction but are about a visible intervention in order make the familiar unfamiliar, acting to reboot our assumptions and expectations about society through the lens of architecture and the urban landscape.
Jeremy Kidd was born London, England and currently lives in Los Angeles, California. A solo exhibition of his works was recently presented at the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna, California, from Feb 27 – March 27, 2007. In addition, Kidd’s works are represented in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City and has been exhibited at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT, the Orange County Museum of Art Biennial, Newport Beach, CA, the Irvine Fine Arts Center in Irvine, CA, and the Deutsche Bank in London.
