A favorite place for Hatha Yoga is The Integral Yoga Institute, an ashram founded in the 1960s by guru Sri Swami Sachidananda. IYI is located in a beautiful Victorian on Dolores Street near Dolores Park. The Hatha Yoga classes taught here tend to have a more spiritual focus, which is to say that they take a more holistic approach, incorporating chanting, meditation and pranayama, (or breathing exercises) into the practice of the physical postures. The philosophy of IYI is to offer classes that help clear the mind, purify the system and stimulate the central nervous system in order to balance the energies of the body and the mind.
