“The paintings become visual journals, documenting and honoring daily life…” – Danäe AndersonAndrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce "Girl Not Looking / Looking", a solo exhibition for Danäe Anderson. Anderson composes her mixed media paintings by tapping into the uncensored conscious, allowing for an uncluttered thought process and the freedom to be spontaneous. Her work combines the randomness of mark making with a visual narrative of icons and language. Taking inspiration from indigenous cultures and Outsider Art, her imagery portrays simple shapes and petroglyph-like forms. The paintings honor daily rituals and celebrate language, dreams, the self, the ordinary, sense/nonsense, the seen/unseen. The viewer catches fleeting impressions of these ideas that have been condensed into obscured symbols and words that float randomly on her expansive backgrounds. Anderson attributes much of her inspiration to her children, who help her to see the connections between art and life. “As I watched my babies grow and learn, I saw how they reacted to the world. It was so direct, so spontaneous, and so non-judgmental. I try to incorporate this into my working process.” There is an underlying sophistication in her visual encryptions that resonates with the complexity of the human experience.
Danäe Anderson earned a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts (now CCA) in 1978 and a MFA in 1998 from San Jose State University. She has taught as a lecturer at the University of California, Davis and the University of Nevada, Reno. Anderson has received a Pollack - Krasner Foundation Grant, and was awarded a fellowship from the Westerns Arts Foundation. She has been commissioned for numerous public art projects and her work is in many collections including the Nevada Museum of Art. Danäe has exhibited at Claudia Chapline Gallery, Stinson Beach, CA; Stremel Gallery, Reno, NV; Gallery 101, Malmo, Sweden; Millbrook Gallery, Ontario, Canada; and many others. This is Danäe’s fifth exhibition at Andrea Schwartz Gallery.
