Description
Based on a superheated play by Victorien Sardou, featuring more violence than a season of Sons of Anarchy, Puccini's Tosca boasts one of opera's most compelling scores, composed as a unitary whole rather than stitched together from setpiece arias and dialogue interludes. The title character is an Italian opera singer caught up in deadly intrigue as her lover hides a political prisioner and the head of the secret police, Scarpia, pursues them. This Opera San José production is double cast, with Jouvanca Jean-Daptiste (sensational in Anna Karenina) and Rebecca Davis alternating as Tosca. - Michael S. Gant sanjose.com
