Description
Escalay melds classical Arabic music and jazz in the tradition of John Coltrane. Led by Tom Chandler, a student of the Nubian oud master Hamza El Din, Escalay’s repertoire includes music by Coltrane, John Zorn, Andrew Hill, Ornette Coleman, Oum Kulthum, as well as Arabo-Andalusian music and original compositions.Since Tom Chandler formed Escalay in 2006, the group has developed a unique musical style ranging from Nubian and Arabic influences to free jazz. One of the foremost oud players in the Bay Area, Tom has performed, recorded, and toured with the Latif Bolat Ensemble, studied and performed with the great Nubian oud master Hamza El Din, and written music for, and recorded and performed with, the medieval ensemble Heliotrope. Since 1993, Tom has played with the West African-inspired folk group the Palm Wine Boys. Tom unites jazz and Middle Eastern music by paring down the essentials of melody and lyricism to create songs based on music’s essential mystery.
