Description
Inspired and created by Cheech Marin, Chicano opens to the public at the de Young in San Francisco, California starting July 22, 2006.Mexican-Americans are the nation’s fastest growing ethnicity, accounting for 58% of the 35 million Latinos in the last U.S. census. Their presence has been manifest at every level of American culture. In order to capture the vitality and impact of the specific cultural world celebrated in his collection, Marin conceived of a sister exhibition that would immerse viewers in the creative ambiance of Chicano urban experience. Chicano Now is a multi-faceted series of interactive installations by comedians, writers, video documentarians, filmmakers, painters, graphic designers, performance artists, musicians, and scholars of Mexican descent. It provides a broader context for the identity-based paintings in Marin’s collection and widens the viewer’s understanding of their relationship to the larger fabric of American life and art.
Presented by Target, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company and produced by Evergreen Exhibitions, the museum duo Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge and Chicano Now: American Expressions showcases the many voices of today’s Chicanos.
==================
Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge
Curated by René Yañez, Chicano Visions is a traditional art exhibition that showcases 26 artists’ interpretations of visual arts, mostly in paintings of oil or acrylic on canvas.
Marin’s personal Chicano art collection forms the core of the presentation.
The exhibition displays artwork from masters of Chicano painting such as Carlos Almaraz, Melesio Casas, Patssi Valdez, Carmen Lomas Garza and Margaret Garcia.
==================
Chicano Now: American Expressions
Chicano Now is a 5,000-square-foot interactive multimedia exhibition featuring a wide array of hands-on interactive displays.
Sections of the exhibition are titled The Border, Family, Work, Style and Who Am I?
Together with entertainers such as Culture Clash, Paul Rodriguez and George Lopez, Marin hopes to explode stereotypes and inspire appreciation of Chicano artistic, scholastic and cultural achievements.

Chicano Encounters: Local Places and Global Communities
Curated by Daniell Cornell, Chicano Encounters features 60 prints and posters that place Chicano history in a global as well as a local San Francisco context.
The three sections of the exhibition address: the culture within San Francisco’s Mission District, social and political struggles within a global context, and issues of identity.
