Bounded by Taylor Street to the north and Empire to the south, First Street to the west and 10th to the east, San Jose’s Japantown is a fairly compact, walkable neighborhood. The area’s little “downtown” runs along Jackson Street and features professional services and retail shops, including a dozen-plus restaurants—from Mexican and Korean to Chinese and Hawaiian and, of course, Japanese—and a recently opened dog boutique.

Naglee Park is old California at its finest, when San Jose was all orchards and vineyards. In fact, Naglee Park was once a vineyard, belonging to Union Gen. Henry Morris Naglee. The land was sold off by his heirs, and the foundations for Naglee Park were laid. Today, a few homes predate the 1906 earthquake, but most of the homes along the tree-lined lanes are pushing the century mark.
In the almost four decades since the telephone tower was built on Communications Hill, a whole new neighborhood has been built around the tower—built, rather than sprung up. Lining the slopes are townhouses, condos and detached single homes, most of which have a commanding view of southern Silicon Valley. It’s a relatively new neighborhood, so buyers can expect all the modern amenities in the homes found there.
