The department is faced with tough budget cuts, which may not affect performance yet, but certainly affect the morale of its officers, who have seen salaries, benefits, and even positions slashed year after year.
Facing a $19 billion budget deficit, the state has sent notices to 40,000 California businesses who have failed to file their tax returns for 2008. It is an effort to begin to close the tax gap between taxes owed and taxes paid. This comes to $6.5 billion dollars, or about one-third of the current deficit.
It’s the law. Drivers may not speak on the phone while driving unless they are using a hands-free device. Police are cracking down, and have already issued 1,600 tickets across the Bay Area for people who fail to comply. San Jose police officer Edgar Ramirez was looking for the last suspect in a violent robbery that had just taken place in a Blossom Hill Check ‘N’ Go store. Then nature called. Ramirez asked some construction workers where he could relieve himself and was directed to a restroom in a vacant apartment. But something just wasn’t right there, so as he entered, Ramirez pulled out his gun.
Intel has announced that it will be purchasing McAfee, the antivirus software and computer security company headquartered in Santa Clara. The purchase is still pending shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and other customary conditions.
