Man Attacks Priest whom He Claims Abused Him

William Lynch walked into the Sacred Heart Retirement Home in Los Gatos on Friday and beat up Father Jerold Lindner, a priest that Lynch says says abused him and his brother 35 years earlier. Lynch and his brother pressed charges against Lindner in 1998, but settled out of court for a payment of $625,000 from the Jesuits of California Province.

City Council Votes Against Pension Check Bonuses

The San Jose City Council voted 4-7 to postpone the payment of bonus checks to retirees for eight months.: The current pension system is $2 billion in the hole and unsustainable as is, warned City Auditor Sharon Erickson. Mayor Chuck Reed agreed, warning that if the city does not do something about pension costs, it will run out of money in 17 years.

Ten former San Jose Giants, including the entire postseason starting rotation, closer Brian Wilson and rookie phenom Buster Posey, will attempt to slay the Texas Rangers in the 2010 World Series starting tonight. Wilson and Posey will join starting pitchers Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Madison Bumgarner, as well as Sergio Romo, Travis Ishikawa, Nate Schierholtz and Pablo Sandoval, as former San Jose Giants trying to break the San Francisco Giants 56-year World Series drought.

Police Chief Rob Davis’s retirement will cost the city millions of dollars over the next 25 years. A thirty-year veteran of the SJPD, he is entitled to 90 percent of his $230,000 salary, a 3 percent annual hike, and lifetime health insurance for himself and his dependents. Payments on the salary alone are expected to exceed $6 million.

Google’s Sergei Brin and Microsoft’s Bill Gates are donating millions of dollars to defeat Prop 23, the ballot initiative which would suspend the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. Spending for and against the contentious measure could top the $154 million record set in 2006 by Proposition 87. In the past two weeks alone, opponents of Prop 23 have raised $11.9 million.

Neighbors had frequently complained to the police about high stakes gambling taking part in Hillview Park in East San Jose. Yesterday, the SJPD responded.  Three men were arrested. One was charged with evading arrest and two were charged withe possession of marijuana for sale. All three were charged with misdemeanor gambling.
