Cara Barer and Emilio Lobato
November 17 – December 22, 2010
Opening Reception: Wednesday, November 17, 2010, 5:30 - 7:30 PM
Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition featuring new work by Cara Barer and Emilio Lobato, with an opening reception held on Wednesday, November 17 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
“My process is an attempt to blur the line between object, sculpture, and photography.”
– Cara Barer
Cara Barer’s archival digital photographs seek to document the physical evolution of the common found object into a sculpture in the state of flux. By changing their physical form, Barer’s common objects take on new meanings. In an age of when the Internet is quickly becoming the primary source of information, Barer’s photographs act as a lament for the passing of an era when books were considered a pathway to knowledge.
“I am interested in the mathematical as well as the seemingly mystical repetition of horizontal lines on a surface.”
– Emilio Lobato
Emilio Lobato’s collage and oil paintings on panel are heavily influenced by early Hispano and Native American textiles. Originating from a family of weavers, Lobato’s paintings mimic these textiles. Each line represents a symbolic passage of time, a process though which Lobato builds his compositions. The final result creates a composition that is intriguing and meaningful in its simplicity, proving that simple forms speak volumes about how we strive to uncover meaning and order in life.
