This 175-voice choir presents the magnificent Mozart Requiem, along with the Litany in B flat by Johann Michael Haydn, and Salve Regina by Franz Joseph Haydn. One of the most beautiful and powerful works ever written, the Mozart Requiem is perhaps the most widely recognized masterpiece of classical choral music. Awed by the work's ferocity, Beethoven found the Requiem "too wild and terrible," while Bruckner held it in veneration as an unattainable masterpiece. While the Haydn brothers' pieces are less well known, they are beautiful examples of the First Viennese School (i.e., 18th century Classical music composers in Vienna).
These concerts are part of the third annual Daniel Pearl Music Day, a global network of performances that use the language of music to promote harmony for humanity. Daniel Pearl Music Day was inspired by the life and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl, who would have turned 41 on October 10th.
