Description

Humanities West, a Bay Area non-profit, will present Benjamin Franklin and the Invention of America, a two-day program of lectures, discussions, and musical presentations exploring how Franklin’s influence as a creative thinker, colonial patriot, master politician, and esteemed diplomat helped form a nation. Presenters include Gary B. Nash (UCLA), Dennis James (Musician), Jessica Riskin (Stanford), Jack N. Rakove (Stanford), Dee Andrews (CSU East Bay) and The London Quartet (Marin)

Benjamin Franklin has come to personify the spirit of Colonial America: open, direct, confident, persistent, practical, and trustworthy. This two-day program will explore Franklin’s contributions and influence as the original thirteen colonies transform themselves into a new kind of society; one capable not only of defeating a much larger and stronger foe, but also of inventing entirely new forms of self-government that have stood the test of time.
