On Tuesday, Santa Clara County prosecutors filed charges against Ralph Baldenegro for the murder of Julie Bucalo in 1991. The suspect is currently in San Quentin, where he faces a 94 year sentence for 12 felonies and a misdemeanor committed during the abduction of his son in 2009.

Nightclub Comes Under Fire

The SJPD suspended the license of the Miami Beach Club for two weeks after a fight there ended in a shooting. According to police, one victim was shot in the stomach and another was grazed by a bullet. The nightclub failed to report the incident, and the police only found out about it after a woman ran into the street and flagged some police officers down.

An Unhappy Christmas for City Custodians

For 25 custodians who keep City Hall and other municipal properties clean, Christmas will not be very merry this year. That is the day that they will have to turn in their badges and join the ranks of the unemployed. They are being let off as part of the plan to cover last year’s $118 million deficit. Though they have since been rehired by the private contractors hired to fill the gap, they are still taking a hit in terms of pay and benefits.

Restaurateur Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charges

Long time restauranteur Emile Mooser, who founded Emile’s, pleaded guilty to charges of purchasing and possessing child pornography. Based on the plea, he will have to register as a sex offender and could face up to three years in prison. Mooser is also being sued by the restaurant’s current owners for allegedly withholding information from them pertaining to the sale.

City Rejects Regional Broadband Plan

City Rejects Regional Broadband Plan

At its weekly meeting on Tuesday, City Council rejected a regional broadband system, based on Motorola. That company had received a $51 million grant from the U.S. Commerce Department to initiate and install the system throughout the Bay Area. City Council argued that the San Francisco-based Urban Area Security Initiative failed to follow standard government contracting procedures, which led to Motorola being favored over other service providers.

Medical Marijuana to Be Taxed

At a special meeting Monday night, City Council voted to impose a 7 percent tax on medical marijuana sold in local dispensaries. The decision was made possible after voters passed Measure U, which empowered City Council to impose a tax as high as 10 percent. No other regulations on dispensaries were passed.

New Deal in the Works for Soccer Stadium

There already is an $89 million deal to build a new stadium for the Earthquakes near Coleman Avenue. It’s been there since 2008. Now, however, the city wants to make the deal even more attractive to Earthquakes owner Lew Wolff and two local developers in an effort to keep them from backing out. The proposed terms of the new deal would save the developers $4 million and give them an additional two years to buy it.
