The students and advisers of the school’s Applied Math Science and Engineering Institute designed an experiment to learn how plants grow in space. If it succeeds, it could lead the way to astronauts growing their own food on long space flights.

UC Santa Cruz Bracing for Possible Violence

It will be a tense day at UC Santa Cruz, as students and faculty return to class after the long weekend. Concerns have been raised about a threat of violence, posted anonymously in a bathroom in the Social Sciences building in December. Though there was no indication of what form the violence would take, many students have announced their intentions to stay home today. The Student Union Assembly canceled a meeting and a small number of professors have canceled classes.

San Jose Airport Terminal on Lockdown after Security Breach

Mineta Airport’s Terminal B was on lockdown Thursday night after a woman exited the secure area and attempted to re-enter through the exit line, bypassing a second screening. Because of the incident, all of the passengers in the terminal were forced to go through a second screening. Even passengers already on planes were told to leave the aircraft and go through screening again.

Intel Recognizes Top Young Scientists at Local Schools

On Wednesday, Intel named 300 high school students nationwide as semifinalists in its annual Science Talent Search competition. A record 26 students are from the South Bay, with two San Jose schools, Harker Academy and Lynbrook, accounting for half of the local nominees. The Harker Academy produced seven intrepid researchers, while Lynbrook produced six.
