Atta Kid is a collaboration between SF Bay Area musicians Daniel Casares (Irma Thomas, Bernard Purdie) on saxes and keyboardist Max Cowan (Zigaboo Modeliste, Jimmy McCracklin). Their debut album, East Basics, was released in fall 2014 and has since received praise from New Orleans' OffBeat magazine. Atta Kid's sound bubbles over with funky street rhythms, percolating B-3 chops, unpredictable, inventive horn arrangements and tasty guitar licks. Sounding as if the Meters grew up in Oakland in the 70s, went to school with Snarky Puppy and hit the road with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Atta Kid writes smart originals that toe the line between contemplation and booty-shakin’. The band shifts effortlessly from funky street beats to fast boogaloo funk with a side trip to D.C. for some go-go grooves. Cowan and Casares write and arrange all the tunes you'll hear on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at Madrone. Hold on tight. Atta Kid hits it hard.
Co-led by Max Cowan (keys) and Daniel Casares (sax), Bay Area-based Atta Kid is East Bay funk with New Orleans soul. Taking funk to a new place, Atta Kid's set consists of smart originals and flipped covers that toe the line between contemplation and booty-shakin'. The band is comprised of the funkiest players anywhere, whose resumés range from Billy Preston to Irma Thomas to Zigaboo Modeliste. Atta Kid adds a New Orleans exit to each side of the Bay Bridge.
Atta Kid is back at Madrone Art Bar, ready to give you a night of funk/motown/soul/original music.
