Description
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the HBO movie For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, is that Cuban-born Andy Garcia finally got to play a Cuban-born character, instead of say, Lucky Luciano (re: Hoodlum). Cause, hey, all us ethnic types are basically the same -- right, Hollywood? The second most remarkable thing about the movie was that it gave one of the world's all-time greatest trumpeters his due. By 16, Sandoval was playing in Cuba's all-star national band, finally defecting in 1990 while on tour with his idol Dizzy Gillespie. He's played with everyone from Sinatra to Herbie Hancock to Justin Timberlake, finding his cool factor in pretty much each of the last five decades. And the guy's only 61 years old. He'll close the Heritage Theater's season with this solo show. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
